Topic: Customers Suck

A while ago, I worked at a locally-owned bookshop/gift shop that had been struggling against the larger chain store in the area. We weren't in any immediate danger of being shut down, but there was a rumor circling around that our store was going out of business, so often times I would get the question, "Is it true you're closing?"

Now, when most people asked this question, they would drop their voice so as not to be overheard, and I could always hear concern in their voice. The owners are well-known and well-liked in the area, and the store itself is a really great place, so we had a lot of loyal regulars. They were always relieved to hear that we weren't going out of business anytime soon.

Obviously, since I'm writing about it here, there was an exception that really ticked me off. A lady called the store and asked if we were closing for good, and I explained that no, we weren't, but we really did appreciate the support of the community and the encouragement of--

"No, no," she interrupted. "I just wanted to know if you're having a going-out-of-business sale."

"Excuse me?"

"You know, where you mark everything down half off or more because you're closing?"

"Well, we're not closing. People have been really stepping up to help--"

"Oh," she said sadly. "Thanks anyway." And she hung up.

Holy crap! Could she have gotten any more tactless?
